Examples of some basic photo editing techniques

For the following example I used a scanner to import my picture onto my computer and Google's FREE image editor, Picasa, to carry out the changes. Click each picture in turn to see the results.

I hope you will agree that Picasa allowed me to make some effective changes to my image with the minimum of fuss and little or no learning curve, but, the image I used in my example above is over 40 years old and having sat on a mantlepiece for all that time, has been exposed to more than it's fair share of abuse. So I've decided to see if I can improve matters further by trying to 'clean up' the image quality. For the following example I've used Corel's Paint Shop Pro Photo X2
