A good many years ago now I invested in a computer for my daughter who was just about to start school. As it transpired not only did no one in my household know anything much about using a computer, we couldn’t even get it set up when we got our purchase home! Obviously someone was going to have to learn how to work the thing. The vote was unanimous!
The first course I signed up for was called ‘Introduction to the Internet’. That was OK but the more I got into it the more questions cropped up. So, I signed up for a Microsoft Office based course. That was fun but I still didn’t know what to do when the computer crashed, where to find things, how to install a program and where to install it to, how to open a pdf file, how to upgrade my hardware, how to defrag my hard drive and why is it called C anyway?
… and so the list goes on!
That’s when I signed up for a Computer Hardware course. From that point on things got a lot more interesting. I learned how to build them, break them, repair them, install and upgrade different operating systems and new hardware. But best of all I learned how computers work. Now I felt I was really getting somewhere!
Next I built my own computer, installed an operating system, installed the necessary drivers to make all my components work together, installed the programs I wanted to use and set up a home network so the growing number of computers dotted around my home could not only communicate with each other but could use the same internet connection.
Having acquired seemingly endless certificates, diplomas and other colourful pieces of paper along the way I took the plunge and sat the CompTIA A+ exam at the beginning of 2004. Yes, I passed with flying colours!
In 2006 I set up my own Computer Tuition business and have enjoyed every moment since....
